Understanding
The Web
Basically the web (or internet) are
phone lines connected to computers. Servers are used to store
the web site files. Servers have 2 main functions, one connecting
you to the web and the other is making your site available
on the web.
Connecting you to the web
You need to be connected to the internet
by a server so you can access the sites on the web. Companies
like AT&T, Microsoft, AOL and your Cable Company, all
offer internet access.
You use a browser like Internet
Explorer or FireFox, to either go directly to a website with
a domain name (www.charternet.com is an example of a domain
name) or use a search engine like Google, Yahoo, MSN and the
others to find sites that you are looking for. You type in
keywords, like ‘Florida Fishing Charters’ and
up comes a list of websites that the search engine has determined
to fit your keywords. (see search
engine marketing to learn more about this).
