Flats Fishing

Flats fishing is commonly referred to as sight fishing, fishing the flats, and backcountry fishing. Flats fishing can occur in both freshwater and saltwater locations especially in bays or lakes. Flats boats are used offering a platform to stand while you fish. Some of the most common flats fishing locations are located throughout Florida including the Everglades, 10,000 Islands (Marco Island area), Tampa Bay, The Florida Keys and Space Coast (Cape Canaveral, Mosquito Lagoon) as well as parts of Mexico, Bahamas and Belize.

Types of Fish in the Flats

There are many types of fish to be caught in the backcountry. Most fishing guides offer a chance to catch Snook, Tarpon, Permit, Redfish, Cobia and Bonefish to name a few.

There are several methods in which you fish the flats. Many fishing guides specialize in a flats fishing technique such as spin casting, light tackle or incorporate fly fishing. Using a variety of these fishing methods is a great way to try and hook that great catch!
