Cruising
Alaska offers a very special way to enjoy this most diverse destination.
From southeast Alaska, featuring the Inside Passage, Juneau and Ketchikan
to southcentral Alaska, considered Alaska's playground and the home
of most of Alaska's population, to the arctic north, an abundance
of activities and adventure await. Significantly, your Galaxsea vessel
will enable you to access areas other Alaskan visitor cannot.
The
rugged coast, with fertile bays and fjords, forests, glaciers,
lakes and streams provide never ending opportunities for fishing,
camping,
hiking, sea kayaking and skiing. Exquisite national parks, ecological
gems and the ever-present glaciers provide cruising visitors the ability
to see first-hand the beauty and splendor of many of nature’s
most incredible sights.
For
example, a trip to Sitka by the Sea, the capital of Russian America,
allows you the rare opportunity to commune with bald eagles, stroll
through the haunting temperate rainforest trails of Totem Park and
see native
totem carvers, silversmiths and artists at work in the Sitka National
Historic Monument.
Traveling
up the outer coast of Baranof and Chichigof Islands offers the chance
to see the famed sea lions, sea otters
and puffins of
the St. Lazaria National Wildlife Refuge along the way. Once there,
discover
the beauty and tranquility of anchoring in a secluded bay on the
rock strewn outer coast of Chichigof Island.
From
there, the scenic Ogden Passage leads to White Sulfur Hot Springs,
perfect for a relaxing
soak in the medicinal warm waters.
Cross Sound
offers a panoramic view of the Brady Glacier and Cape Spencer,
prime salmon and halibut country. At Elfin Cove, you’ll
find a quaint boardwalk village of artists and fisherman, bartering
for fresh oysters
and the catch of the day.
A
visit to Gustavus could reveal the fresh tracks of moose on
the fine sandy beaches left by the retreating glaciers. Or
perhaps you’d
enjoy an optional flightseeing trip with a local bush pilot over
the spectacular Glacier Bay Park and take the opportunity to
feast on the
salmon, halibut and fresh Dungeness crab abundant in the area.
Cruising Alaska also provides another of nature’s wonders at Key
Strait and the famous Point Adolphus, where humpback whales feed on the
plankton against the backdrop of the jagged peaks of the Fairweather
Range.
From the marble grottoes of Basket Bay or fishing the trophy
steelhead streams of Sitkon Bay, visiting the ruins of historic
Chatham Cannery
or exploring the shore based whaling station of Killisnoo,
Alaska delivers adventure and excitement like no other destination.
Next,
cruise the shores of Admiralty Island looking for brown bear, followed
by a relaxing soak in the stone hot springs
next to the
waterfall in
Daranof. There, you’ll anchor in a mist-filled secret
bay, complete with a hanging glacier as your neighbor.
A cruise to Fredrick Sound provides an excellent perch for
watching the sea lion rookery at the Brothers Islands. And
while there,
be sure to
capture a glimpse of the resident pod of Orca whales, then
make your way through the ice strew Tracy Arm National Wilderness
Area. As
you weave through the icebergs, catch black bears and mountain
goats at
play, along with the actively calving Sawyer Glacier at the
terminus
of this
steep sided Fjord.
Finally,
historic Juneau, the capital of Alaska, gives a sampling of the art
galleries and nightlife
of this exciting
frontier
town. [top] |
